I am a British/New Zealand painter. I am particularly inspired by the forces of nature and the landscape around me. When I was in NZ in March 2020, my Mother took me to Mount Taranaki and told me the stories of her grandmother’s Maori family who came from the Te Atiawa tribe near Mount Taranaki. I have been making work that has been inspired by the ‘Maori World View’ which involves understanding the close connection between people and nature and seeing people as part of the natural world, as protectors of the life force of the forests, rivers, lakes and mountains under their care. I am researching the symbols and meanings in Maori art forms and Koru, being the motif frequently used representing the growth of a new fern frond, as the tightly wound spiral unravels into a fully formed leaf. The fern which springs from the folds of the earth is believed to represent survival and existence. I have been exploring this idea in my paintings of the native bush and trees in the UK. Painting has given me hope and enjoyment, throughout the pandemic.
Education: BA Honours Visual Studies/German, Oxford Brookes University. After giving up working in Export Sales and Publishing, I worked as a German and Dutch speaking interpreter for the NHS. After a period of volunteering as a Diversional Therapist at the Shakespeare Hospice and after being a contestant on Sky Arts ” Landscape Artist of the Year”, I was motivated to paint seriously again myself.
Contact me if you would like to commission a painting, if you would like any further information or would like to buy any of the paintings on my website. I would be very happy to help you.
